Is winter sports cover included with my bank account or card?
Last checked against each provider's policy documents on 27 October 2026
Often, yes. Many UK packaged accounts that include worldwide travel insurance also include winter sports, including Nationwide FlexPlus, the Barclays Travel Pack, Lloyds Platinum, Halifax Ultimate Reward, NatWest and RBS Reward Platinum, HSBC Premier, Virgin Money Club M, Monzo Max, Revolut Metal and Ultra, and Chase Protect.
The catch is the limits. Many policies cap winter sports at a set number of days (31 days a year with Barclays, Lloyds, Halifax and HSBC, 21 days in 12 months with Chase Protect, 17 days a year with Virgin Money Club M), and age limits range from no upper limit (Nationwide) to under 70 (HSBC Premier, Chase Protect).
Off-piste rules differ a lot. Some policies need a qualified guide or instructor with you (Nationwide, Barclays, NatWest, HSBC, Monzo, Revolut, Amex Platinum), others cover off-piste only within resort boundaries. Check your own policy wording before you book, and before you buy a separate ski policy.

Where people get caught out
- Day caps. Many policies limit winter sports to 31 days a year in total, not per trip (Barclays, Lloyds, Halifax, HSBC). Chase Protect allows 21 days in 12 months and Virgin Money Club M 17 days a year. Two week-long trips plus a long weekend can use up a short allowance.
- Off-piste and guides. Nationwide, Barclays, HSBC, Monzo and Revolut cover off-piste only with a qualified guide, NatWest only with a locally licensed guide, and Amex Platinum only with a qualified instructor. Lloyds, Halifax and Chase cover it only within resort boundaries, and Halifax also wants a qualified ski instructor with you for winter sports claims. Heli-skiing, ski jumping and similar activities are excluded by most policies.
- Age limits. Cover can stop at 70 (HSBC Premier, Monzo Max, Amex medical cover), 71 (Halifax), 75 (Virgin Money Club M), 76 (Revolut) or 80 (Barclays Travel Pack, Lloyds). NatWest charges £100 a year per person aged 70 or over for an age extension.
- Equipment. Own ski equipment is usually capped at about £500, payouts often fall with the age of the kit, and some policies don't cover hired skis or boots at all (HSBC Premier). Kit left unattended or out of sight is a common reason for refusal.
- Piste closure and avalanche. Usually a small daily amount (often £30 a day, up to £300) and only if all or most pistes at your booked resort close. Some policies only pay in set season dates. Avalanche delay cover usually needs a minimum delay (5, 12 or 24 hours).
- Upgrades. The Nationwide longer trip upgrade doesn't extend winter sports cover beyond 31 days, and other packs limit winter sports days whatever trip upgrade you buy. Older travellers or those with medical conditions may need to pay for an upgrade or declare conditions first.
- Card cover isn't the same as account cover. Amex Platinum only covers activities on its list, has no separate ski equipment, lift pass or piste closure cover, and its medical cover stops for anyone aged 70 or over.
- Not every plan includes it. Revolut Premium doesn't include travel or winter sports insurance: only Metal and Ultra do. Monzo Max winter sports cover only applies outside the UK.
Could you be paying twice?
If your account or card already includes winter sports, check whether you also pay for any of these.
- Ski insurance sold with a holiday package or by a tour operator, often added at checkout.
- A standalone single-trip or annual policy with a winter sports add-on.
Compare before cancelling anything: a standalone policy may have higher equipment, piste closure or off-piste cover than your account.
