Does Nationwide FlexPlus include travel insurance?

Last checked against Nationwide's policy documents on 14 October 2026

The short answer

Yes. Nationwide FlexPlus (£18 a month) includes worldwide family travel insurance from Aviva for trips of up to 31 days, including winter sports.

It also includes worldwide family mobile phone insurance from Assurant, and UK and European breakdown cover from the AA. You don't need to buy or activate the travel cover: it applies to each trip automatically, but some situations need a paid upgrade.

Where people get caught out

  • Pre-existing medical conditions aren't covered unless you declare them to Aviva and buy the pre-existing conditions upgrade, which is an annual contract.
  • Trips longer than 31 days. Nothing that happens after day 31 is covered unless you buy a longer trip upgrade (up to 120 days). The upgrade isn't available for winter sports trips.
  • Expensive holidays. Cancellation is capped at £5,000 per person. If your trip costs more, you can pay to raise it to £7,500 or £10,000.
  • Holidays in the UK only count if you are away for at least 2 nights in a row, with pre-booked paid accommodation or pre-paid travel.
  • Grown-up children. The age cut-offs differ: under 23 for travel, but under 19 (or 22 in full-time education, living at home) for phones.
  • Leaving your phone unattended. The policy gives examples of declined claims, such as leaving it on a pub table while you go to the bar, or on show in your car.
  • Scratches, tablets and new phones. Cosmetic damage isn't covered if the phone still works, tablets aren't covered, and replacements are refurbished rather than brand new.
  • Switching account. All three covers end when you stop being a FlexPlus account holder.

Could you be paying twice?

If you have FlexPlus, check whether you also pay for any of these. Nationwide's own phone policy tells account holders to consider whether they already have the same cover elsewhere.

  • A separate annual travel policy. You may still want one if you take trips longer than 31 days, need more than £5,000 cancellation cover, or want cover the upgrades don't offer.
  • Phone insurance from your network or a retailer. FlexPlus covers phones up to £2,000 each for the whole family at home.
  • Separate breakdown cover, from the AA, RAC or as a car insurance add-on.

Compare limits and excesses before cancelling anything: a separate policy may give you more cover than FlexPlus does.

Yes, winter sports holidays are included, with limits for things like ski equipment and piste closure. The longer trip upgrade is not available for winter sports trips.
Is my partner covered by FlexPlus travel insurance?
Yes, if they live at home with you and are a UK resident. Dependent children under 23 are covered too, including stepchildren and foster children.
