Halifax Ultimate Reward: what insurance is included?

Last checked against Halifax's policy documents on 27 October 2026

The short answer

The Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account costs £19 a month and comes with four insurance benefits: worldwide family travel insurance from Allianz Assistance, mobile phone insurance from Assurant (arranged by Lifestyle Services Group), AA Breakdown Family Cover, and home emergency cover underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance.

Travel cover is for trips of up to 31 days, including certain winter sports (up to 31 days a year) and golf trips, with emergency medical cover up to £10 million and cancellation cover up to £5,000. It covers you, your partner and children aged 18 or under (24 or under in full-time education). Cover ends on the account holder's 71st birthday. The phone cover is for one phone per account holder (two on a joint account), up to £2,000 per claim with a £100 excess.

Some terms change from 1 December 2026: ski touring will need a locally licensed guide, winter sports cover adds physiotherapy, and phones that cost more than £2,000 won't be covered. The AA breakdown cover isn't changing. The Halifax brand is also moving to Lloyds.

Where people get caught out

  • Turning 71. Travel cover stops completely on the account holder's 71st birthday, and a partner's cover stops at 71 too. If you are close to 71, plan for separate cover before your next trip.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions aren't covered unless you tell the insurer and it agrees. An extra premium may apply. Halifax says its online medical screening link is unavailable, so you need to call Membership Services.
  • Trips longer than 31 consecutive days are not covered unless you buy a trip extension upgrade (45, 62, 93, 186 or 279 days).
  • Off-piste skiing. It is only covered within resort boundaries, following local ski patrol guidelines, and winter sports claims linked to off-piste skiing are turned down unless you are with a qualified ski instructor. Heli-skiing, ski jumping and ski acrobatics are not covered.
  • Register your phone. It isn't covered until you register it, through Online Banking (View account benefits) or by calling Membership Services. Have the make, model, network and IMEI (dial *#06#) ready.
  • Lost or stolen phones. Tell the police and your network as soon as possible. Halifax warns that not doing so could mean your claim is declined.
  • Home emergencies. Cover is capped at £250, and you must contact the insurer before calling your own tradesperson. Tenants need their landlord's agreement first. A broken freezer, for example, is not covered.
  • Travel advice. There is no cover if you travel against FCDO (or equivalent) advice, or if you cannot or choose not to travel because of pandemic-related advice.
  • Changes from 1 December 2026. Ski touring will need a locally licensed guide. Phones that cost more than £2,000 won't be covered, and phone accessories must be claimed together with the phone. Allianz Assistance becomes Allianz. Read the Guide to changes for the full list.

Could you be paying twice?

If you have Ultimate Reward, check whether you also pay for any of these.

  • A separate annual travel policy, or travel cover that comes with another bank account or credit card.
  • Standalone phone or gadget insurance, or phone cover sold by your network or home insurer, for the phone you have registered.
  • Separate personal breakdown cover. If you need National Recovery or European cover, check what you hold, as the AA cover here is roadside and at home only.
  • Home emergency cover bought as an add-on to your home insurance or from an energy supplier.

Compare limits and excesses before cancelling anything: this account pays up to £250 per home emergency claim, and a separate policy may give you more cover than Ultimate Reward does.
