The short answer

Where people get caught out

  • The insurance must be turned on. Virgin Money says the benefits only apply to Club M customers who have turned their insurance on.
  • Winter sports days. Skiing is covered for up to 17 days in total each year, not per trip. Two week-long trips use it up. Some of the winter sports cover only applies between 1 December and 15 April in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Turning 75. Every adult on the policy must be under 75.
  • Trips longer than 31 days need a paid upgrade (45 or 62 days) before you go.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions. Some are covered and others need a paid upgrade, so call the medical screening line before you travel.
  • UK trips have lower limits. Cancellation is capped at £2,000 and belongings at £500 for trips within the UK.
  • Breakdown in Europe only covers your own vehicle. In someone else's car you are only covered in the UK.
  • Living abroad. You need to have lived in the UK, Isle of Man or Channel Islands for 6 of the last 12 months, and stay there for 6 out of every 12 months, to stay covered.

Could you be paying twice?

If you have Club M with the insurance turned on, check whether you also pay for any of these.

  • A separate annual travel policy, or travel cover that comes with a credit card or another bank account.
  • Phone, laptop or tablet insurance from your network, a retailer or a gadget insurer. Club M covers gadgets up to £2,000 each, as well as phones.
  • Separate breakdown cover, or a breakdown add-on on your car insurance.

Compare limits and excesses before cancelling anything: a separate policy may give you more cover than Club M does.
