HSBC Premier travel insurance: what does it cover?

Last checked against HSBC's policy documents on 27 October 2026

The short answer

HSBC Premier Worldwide Travel Insurance, underwritten by Aviva, is available to HSBC UK Premier account holders. Premier has no monthly account fee, but to qualify you need an income of at least £100,000 paid into the account, or £100,000 of savings or investments with HSBC in the UK.

Cover is for trips of up to 31 days (up to 120 days with a paid upgrade), including winter sports for up to 31 days a year. You and your partner must be under 70 when the trip starts, and children and grandchildren must be under 23.

It isn't automatic: you apply for the travel insurance separately, and you are not covered until HSBC tells you it has been accepted.

Where people get caught out

  • You have to apply. Having a Premier account isn't enough on its own: you are only covered once HSBC confirms your application.
  • Turning 70. You and your partner must be under 70 when each trip starts. HSBC says that once you reach 70 you are no longer covered.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions aren't covered unless they are on the accepted conditions list, or you declare them to the HSBC Medical Risk Assessment Helpline (0800 051 7457) and they are accepted in writing.
  • Trips longer than 31 days need the paid upgrade (up to 120 days), and you must have booked your return trip before you buy it.
  • Children travelling without you. Premier children are only covered in set situations, such as travelling with you, staying with close relatives abroad, or on a school trip.
  • Ski kit and off-piste. Hired skis and boots aren't covered if lost or damaged, off-piste skiing needs a qualified guide with you at all times, and heli-skiing, glacier skiing and freestyle are excluded.
  • Changing or closing the account. Cover ends when the Premier account is closed or changed.
  • UK holidays only count if you are away for at least 2 nights in a row.

Could you be paying twice?

If you have HSBC Premier travel insurance, check whether you also pay for any of these.

  • A separate annual travel policy for anyone the Premier policy already covers.
  • Travel cover on a premium credit or charge card, such as American Express Platinum.
  • Ski insurance sold with a holiday package, when you already have up to 31 days of winter sports a year.

Compare limits and excesses before cancelling anything: a separate policy may give you more cover, or cover people the Premier policy doesn't.
